Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane is doubtful for their Bundesliga home match against Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday due to calf issues.
Kane was subbed off at half-time of Bayern’s Champions League last 16 play-off against Celtic on Wednesday evening. After the game, he said: “I need to get checked and see what’s exactly going on.”
Ahead of the match, he took a break before the final training session. “I wanted to take every chance to be on the pitch,” Kane said of his first-half performance.
But he and Coach Vincent Kompany realised that it would be better “to make room for another player.”
Kompany said that it was “a shame that Harry was out” and that he couldn’t yet said for how long he will be sidelined.
Alphonso Davies scored deep into stoppage-time to give Bayern a 1-1 draw, which was enough to advance to the last 16 combined with the 2-1 win in the first leg.
“We knew they would come here with high intensity, and we know we had to match that intensity, which we did,” Davies said.
Kompany added: “Of course, we want to beat our opponents by as large a margin as possible, but if that doesn’t work, then you have to work hard for the results. That’s exactly what we’ve done, and in the end, what counts is that we’ve gone through.”
A draw on Friday will set up the last 16 ties and Bayern will face either Bundesliga rivals Bayer Leverkusen or La Liga side Atletico Madrid.
Board member for sport Max Eberl said he would prefer to face Atletico Madrid because “if you’re talking about an European Cup, you would like to play internationally.” (dpa/NAN)
