Sen. Ibrahim Lamido (APC Sokoto-East) has offered scholarship to 30 orphans whose parents were killed by bandits to study at the Maryam Abatcha American University (MAAU), Kano.
Lamido’s representative and Committee leader, Prof. Mu’azu Shamaki, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Sokoto.
Shamaki, of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto, said that the 30 beneficiaries were selected through a strict process.
He said the criteria included being an orphan, vulnerable and affected by banditry, among others.
According to him, the initiative was under an ‘Education Trust Fund’ floated by the Senator, adding that the beneficiaries had since commenced their studies.
According to him, the university’s Founder, Prof. Abubakar Gwarzo, had interacted with the students where he enjoined them to concentrate and abiding by the school’s regulation, commending the senator’s effort.
Shamaki said the beneficiaries comprised 26 male and four females, selected from the eight local government areas in the senatorial district and would study professional courses.
He said the courses include: Medical and Allied Sciences, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligent and others to prepare them to become productive in their lives.
Shamaki explained that each benefiting student would be collecting a N30,000 monthly stipend, besides the payment of tuition fees and securing accomodations within the vicinity of the institution.
“ Lamido’s commitment to the development and prosperity of his constituents and humanity is a testament to his resilience and passion for the progress of the people.
“This is not only in Sokoto East Senatorial District but the entire state as many had benefited from his several empowerment and support programmes, ” he said.
Shamaki recalled that Lamido had sponsored no fever than 42 students from thevconstituent to study both Graduate and Post-Graduate programmes in India.
This was in addition to numerous other forms of financial assistance given to msny students from the axis.
A beneficiary, Zubaida Umar, who will study Public Health, expressed excitement over the opportunity and vowed to be dedicated in order to excel.
Umar urged other well-to-do persons to emulate Lamido’s efforts, stressing that many families were now vulnerable due to the recurring security challenges bedeviling the area. (NAN)
