Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has commiserated with the Government of Enugu State and families of the victims of Saturday’s tanker accident in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a tanker, loaded with petrol, collided with some vehicles and erupted in flames, killing scores of people in Enugu on Saturday.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, Kalu expressed deep sadness over the incident which caused the death of several people and left many with injuries.

He described the incident, which occurred at 9th Mile, 82 Division Expressway, Ugwuonyeama section of the city, as ‘horrific’.

“I am deeply saddened by the news of the fuel tanker explosion in Enugu State which caused the death of several people, with many also injured.

“This horrific incident happened just days after another tanker exploded in Niger State, with over 80 people killed.

“I am deeply concerned; it’s been one death too many.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families as well as the government and the people of Enugu State.

“I also want to use this opportunity to urge the Federal Government to take immediate action to address the deplorable state of our roads, especially the 9th mile expressway, provide safety measures and educate citizens to help prevent such tragedies in the future.

“It is our responsibility to act now and protect ourselves,” he said.

The deputy speaker prayed for quick recovery of the injured victims and for the repose of those who died in the unfortunate incident.

He urged relevant government agencies to provide relief materials to the bereaved, pledging that the National Assembly would continue to support the federal government through budgetary allocations and legislative instruments. (NAN)
