Prof Jonah Onuoha, Director, Centre for American Studies at University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) says, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s second tenure will impact significantly on advancing global peace.
Onuoha said this in an interview with newsmen in Nsukka on Tuesday when he discussed Trump’s forthcoming inauguration on Jan. 20 as the 47th President of the United States of America.
The don said, “Trump’s second tenure as 47th President of U.S. that will start from Jan. 20 is a welcome development as it will help advance global peace.
“Trump in his first tenure distinguished himself as a progressive who cannot be stopped by anybody where ensuring global peace is concerned.
“When inaugurated, Trump is expected to intervene in conflict-affected countries and regions, especially the Middle East, since the U.S. has all it takes to do that.
“To achieve the task of ensuring world peace, Trump should first and foremost strengthen the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and reposition it toward achieving the purpose for which it was established.”
Onuoha, a former Head of Department of Political Science at UNN, advised Trump to give especial attention to Africa, particularly Nigeria, in terms of development, to enable the country to play the role it is expected to play as the giant of Africa.
“Trump should enhance the U.S.-Africa relations in critical sectors such as energy, technology, innovation, and the economy,” he said.
The university teacher urged countries such as Iran and Palestine including their allies to end all hostilities with Israel and embrace all efforts toward ensuring peace in the region.
“Hamas in Palestine should without further delay take heed of Trump’s call for the release of all hostages in their custody to avoid further escalation of the faceoff with Israel. (NAN)
