School administrators in Abuja on Monday urged students to put in their best as schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and its environs resumed for second term academic session.
The administrators, who gave the advice in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), urged students to focus on their studies, adding that the new year has come with benefits that the students can tap from.
NAN reports that at the Junior Secondary School (JSS), Jabi 1, students were seen receiving lectures in their various classes.
The Principal of the school, Dr Grace Onyeanusi, told NAN that the turnout of students on the first day of resumption was encouraging.
“This is a new year and we are resuming with new life in a better way, so the students have been encouraged to put their best in this new academic year.
“We have an average turnout on the first day as over 500 out of the 1,000 population of students resumed today,” she said.
Meanwhile, the situation was different at the Local Education Authority (LEA) School, Utako, as the turnout of pupils was very low.
The Assistant Head Teacher 2 (Academy), Mrs Ann Shimave, said out of the 366 pupils in the school, only 74 resumed for academic activities.
Shimave urged the pupils to take their education serious, noting that education is the only power to rise up in the society as well as defend their rights.
She called for the face-lift of the school building as some classrooms were in dilapidating state.
“Some parts of the school building are dilapidated and we are afraid that two blocks of classrooms may fall soon.
“We have moved the pupils from the dilapidated building and praying that the authority will come to our rescue by renovating the school as well as providing infrastructural facilities,” she said.
Dr Olubukola Dosunmu, Proprietor, Toddler Haven and Everest Heights International Academy, charged students to take advantage of technology to improve their academic performances.
Dosunmu, who said that her school would resume for physical academic session on Wednesday, said but students had begun online academic activities.
According to her, this is to allow the school management get the learning environment cleaned as well as conducive for students to learn.
“We have actually started online teaching and learning today but students will be made to resume on Wednesday so that we can get the school environment ready for them.
“This second term academic calender is not a time to play but for the children to brace up with their academy especially as this term hopes to be very busy with lots of activities.
“I will also advise students to use this academic term to embrace more cyber literacy through technology, ” she said. (NAN)
