China Mourns Passing Of Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter

China has commiserated with the U.S. over the passing of former President Jimmy Carter, who died on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2024 at the age of 100.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokeperson, Mao Ning, made this known at the regular virtual news conference by the ministry held on Tuesday in Beijing, China

The minister described Carter as a former U.S. President who contributed to the development of bilateral ties and friendly exchanges between the two nations.

According to her, Carter’s was a driving force in his role on promoting China-U.S. relations.

Mao said, “China extends deep condolences on the passing of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter.

“We pay high tribute to Carter. He was a driving force and the decision-maker in the establishment of diplomatic ties between the U.S. and China.

“He made important contributions over the years to the bilateral relationship and friendly exchanges, and cooperation between the two countries.”

The minister also expressed China’s readiness to assist Vanuatu in the wake of the 7.3 magnitude earthquake that occurred on Dec. 17, 2024, resulting in the damage of buildings in the capital city Port Vila, and other places.

She said at the request of Vanuatu’s government, four Chinese earthquake engineering experts had as of Dec. 30, 2024, arrived Vanuatu to assess safety of buildings in the hard-hit areas and conduct post-quake secondary disaster survey.

“China is ready to do more to assist the post-disaster reconstruction effort in Vanuatu.

“The Chinese government stands ready to continue providing relevant assistance to Vanuatu in light of the situation and actual needs,” she said.

She further expressed President Xi Jinping’s condolence message to the Acting South Korean President, Choi Sang-mok over the Jeju Air crash in Muan that resulted in the death of 179 people.

“On behalf of the Chinese government and people, President Xi expresses deep condolences over the death of the victims and sincere sympathy to the bereaved families, and wish the injured a speedy recovery,” Mao said. (NAN)
