The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has reaffirmed its commitment to the safety of Nigerians, with the onset of the harmattan which is usually associated with fire outbreaks.
The Head, Public Relations Office of the service, Deputy-Controller of Fire (DCF), AbdulRasheed Ashafa, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.
Ashafa said that it was imperative for the service to intensify its efforts to ensure public safety, particularly during the period.
He said urged people to desist from indiscriminate bush burning, overloading of circuits and improper use of appliances.

Ashafa also advised Nigerians to ensure that fire extinguishers were readily available in their offices and homes, and to have the requisite knowledge in case of any emergency.
He called for careful handling of candles, stoves and kerosene lamps, while emphasising the need to keep flammables in safe conditions.
According to him, fire spreads rapidly due to the dry, windy conditions, with tendency to cause widespread destruction and loss of lives.
“We urge the general public to join the movement for a safer Nigeria. In this season, let’s work together to protect our homes, markets, and environment from fire disasters.
“Remember, fire safety is a collective responsibility. By adopting preventive measures and staying vigilant, we can save lives and property,” he said.
He also said that the Service would adopt nationwide awareness campaigns, workshops, as well as community outreach programmes as part of efforts geared towards preventing fire incidents during the harmattan.
According to him, the aim is to equip Nigerians with the knowledge and tools to prevent fires.
“We are also collaborating with organisations like the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to extend the reach of our safety messages, ensuring that even the most vulnerable communities are not left out.”
Ashafa urged Nigerians to visit the service website or follow it on social media for more information on fire safety.
“Let’s make this harmattan season safe for everyone.
Together, we can prevent fires, not fight them.
“Nigerians should also be conversant with the service emergency numbers which are 112 or 0803 200 355 in case of any emergency,” Ashafa said.(NAN)
