The Federal Government on Monday commended the election of the Republic of Benin, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia and The Gambia, as Members into the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council.
Amb. Eche Abu-Obe, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja.
According to him, the ministry wishes to congratulate Benin, DRC, The Gambia and Ethiopia on their election by the UN General Assembly on Oct. 9, 2024, to the Council.
“The Council is an agency of profound importance, especially in these difficult times. To this end, the Federal Republic of Nigeria is committed to the upholding tenets of human rights and the rules-based international order.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes the critical value that a free press plays in the support of human rights and democracy.
“It is, therefore, important to convey that, contrary to some reports, it is a matter of public record that Nigeria did not present a candidate for admission to the Council on this occasion.
“Nigeria offered our full support to the two West African states that will join the Council in January, 2025 up until 2027.
“We will continue to work with the Council and other international, regional and national organisations in their vital work, in the pursuit of inalienable fundamental human rights,” Abu-Obe said. (NAN)
