Tension has engulfed the Rano Local Government Area of Kano State following a violent mob attack on the Rano Police Division, which resulted in the death of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and widespread destruction of property.
According to a press statement issued by the Kano State Police Command and signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the violence was triggered by the death of a detained suspect, Abdullahi Musa, who had been arrested for reckless motorcycle riding and was suspected of being under the influence of substances.
The statement noted that Musa, a local motorcycle mechanic, was taken into custody on 25th May 2025 at approximately 8:15 pm following multiple public complaints. However, while in detention, he reportedly displayed signs of weakness and was rushed to Rano General Hospital, where he sadly passed away the following morning, 26th May 2025, around 6:00 am.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori, PhD, who visited the scene and also paid a condolence visit to the Emir of Rano, His Highness Ambassador Dr. Mohammed Isah Umar (Autan Bawo 19), has ordered a thorough and transparent investigation to uncover both the immediate and underlying causes of the incident.
As part of the response to the crisis, 27 suspects have thus far been arrested in connection with the violent attack, and normalcy has since been restored to the area.
The Police Command has urged residents to remain calm and to refrain from acts of violence or taking the law into their own hands. “The Command extends its condolences to the family of the deceased DPO, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, and assures the public of its commitment to maintaining peace and public order throughout the state,” the statement read.
The police have also appealed to the public to cooperate with investigators as they work to ensure that justice is served.
